Jeffrey Smart and Hill End

"There were a lot of deserted cottages at Hill End. Many of them had disappeared under the heavy growths of blackberries which are everywhere. Some of them just seemed an enormous hump of deep green foliage, and the blackberry bushes were impenetrable."

..."Conveniently forgetting one of the golden rules of Hill End, 'Never take anything away,' I brought the glass decanter down to Sydney; it would be ideal for whiskey or wine and it looked elegant...."

...."Luckily, I had left the bathroom door open and the explosion threw me back into the hall..." later..."The fire brigade arrived and hosed everything down...The doctor, a friend, turned up, and instead  of immediately treating me, collapsed in helpless laughter at the explosion site. The chief of the fire brigade came out of the building and waved the lavatory seat at the crowd, all in nightwear, yelling, ' Jeffery Smart is the most powerful man in Sydney.' All the wise ones wagged their heads and said, 'The golden rule was broken and Hill End has taken its revenge." Jeffrey Smart, not quite straight, a memoir, page 320-321
